Peugeot’s forward-thinking iOn is an affordable, all-electric city car that is perfectly suited to the urban motorist. The model is cheap to run and kind to the environment, while its compact shape and responsive powertrain makes nipping through the city an effortless and enjoyable task.
The car’s striking look means it stands out for more than its innovative powertrain. A lack of front-mounted engine has allowed Peugeot to keep the front overhang extremely short, which creates a smooth arc from the front bumper all the way over to the tailgate. A large windscreen lets more light into the cabin, and semi-circular side windows reflect the model’s aerodynamic shape. Front fog lights with integrated daytime running lights, automatic headlights, and a headlight levelling device are all standard features on the iOn. For a touch of personalisation you can choose from four paint shades which include Antarctic White and Pearl Black.
You may be surprised by how much space is inside the city car, and by the number of handy storage areas found throughout the cabin. The front seats slide and recline to adapt to different drivers, and the rear bench, which seats two, can be split in half and folded to expand the boot space. Efficiency may be the main focus of the iOn, but it also has a classy feel inside the cabin. Both the three-spoke steering wheel and gear knob are wrapped in soft black leather.
Engines and performance
The model’s main talking point is its zero-emission output. This is all thanks to the combination of a Neodyme electric motor and 16kWh lithium-ion battery. The motor generates 63bhp and 180Nm of torque which helps it to reach a top speed of 81mph, which is more than enough pace even if you need to make a motorway trip.
Charging the battery is quick and effortless simply by plugging the car into an outlet, and you have a number of options. Choose a rapid charge to top up the battery while you are on the move, or a longer overnight charge which gives the battery full energy ready for the next day’s adventures. A full charge from a domestic socket takes approximately seven hours, while a fast charge can get the battery to 80 percent capacity in just 30 minutes.
Safety and technology
All of Peugeot’s trusted safety features have been added to the iOn at no additional cost to help you avoid an accident on the road. They include Electronic Stability Control (ESC) which manages the car’s output to prevent skidding, oversteer and understeer. The Traction Control System (TCS) maximises grip in slippery conditions, and ABS makes sure you can turn away from danger during an emergency stop.
All the features you need to stay entertained and connected in the iOn are also fitted at no additional cost. The radio/CD player includes a USB port so you can play music from an external device. By connecting your smartphone to the system via Bluetooth®, it is also possible to make and receive calls hands-free.
