Peugeot’s award-winning 308 is an ideal family car, as buyers have a choice between the compact yet spacious hatchback or the 308 SW estate with its practical and flexible interior. A stylish design and abundance of advanced technology also play a big part in the car’s appeal.
An aggressive sporty look tells you that the 308 is great fun to drive. Strong lines stretch down the bonnet and along each wing to highlight the model’s power. They are joined by slim headlamps either side of a signature grille, while the rear gains Peugeot’s instantly recognisable ‘claw effect’ taillights. The stylish alloy wheels sit close to the rear overhang on the hatchback to keep its dimensions tight, while the 308 SW estate has a much longer shape to increase the room inside the cabin.
The car’s cabin is where you will find Peugeot’s sophisticated new i-Cockpit which aims to enhance the driving pleasure for everyone that settles behind the wheel. Key elements of i-Cockpit include a smaller steering wheel that accentuates your feeling of control and a head-up instrument display which keeps your focus on the road. Both the hatchback and estate offer impressive amounts of boot space to please families who don’t travel light. As much as 501 litres can be carried in the hatchback when the rear bench is upright, while the estate holds up to 810 litres with the same arrangement.
Engines and performance
Peugeot’s i-Cockpit innovation would count for little if the 308’s engines weren’t well-powered and fuel efficient. Choose from PureTech petrols that can return as much as 70.6mpg combined and emit from 95g/km of CO2. The quickest also completes 0-60mph in around nine seconds (hatchback). In both the hatchback and estate, the BlueHDi units are the pick of the bunch for fuel economy. The 98bhp 1.6-litre engine with start/stop system can return an unbeatable 78.5mpg combined, when fitted with 15/16-inch wheels. Peugeot has also dropped the car’s centre of gravity by 20mm to help pin it to the road around bends and reduce body roll.
Safety and technology
Safety is another area of strength for the 308 as is evidenced by its five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Active technology including Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) all come together to keep you in control and out of trouble during the most testing circumstances. Passive additions such as driver, front, side and curtain airbags protect occupants if a collision were to happen.
Also on the standard equipment list is a Peugeot Connect Sound DAB digital radio with CD player. Upgrade from Access to swap it for a 9.7-inch colour touchscreen with built-in satellite navigation. Hands-free Bluetooth® also features across the range to keep you connected as you drive.
